Buddy Davis Wild Caught: The Life and Struggles of an American Fishing Town

Buddy Davis has spent his life in Sneads Ferry, North Carolina, where his family has deep roots in the fishing industry. His father and grandfather, originally from Davis Shores, were also fishermen. Davis began accompanying his father on fishing trips at a young age, around six or seven years old, and by the age of fifteen or sixteen, he started running the boat himself. His three sons and one daughter have also been involved in the fishing business, with his sons participating in shrimping and his daughter marrying a fisherman.

Dr. Carolyn Currin began her tenure at NOAA's Beaufort Lab in 1983, initially serving as a technician under Dr. Jud Kenworthy. Charlie Albertson Voices from the Working Waterfront Oral History Project

Charlie Albertson, born in 1932, is a former North Carolina Senator from Beaulaville, North Carolina. He grew up on a farm in Eastern Duplin County during the Great Depression, where he learned farming chores and purchased his first guitar at the age of 11. His interest in public service was influenced by his father's involvement in the community, serving on the School Board in Duplin County.

Christine Reintjes and David June NOAA Beaufort Lab Oral Histories

Ms. Christine Reintjes was born and raised in Carteret County, North Carolina. She is the daughter of the late John Reintjes, a fisheries biologist at NOAA’s Beaufort Laboratory from 1956 to about 1980. Mr. David June spent his formative childhood years in Carteret County, NC. David’s late father was Fred C. June, a fisheries biologist at NOAA’s Beaufort Laboratory from 1955 to about 1966. Christine and David’s fathers established the Menhaden Program at the Beaufort Laboratory in the mid-1950s.

Christopher Hickman Sector Management in New England

Chris Hickman, 63, is a commercial fisherman out of Hatteras, North Carolina. Mr. Hickman began fishing in the 1970's after retiring from farming; his grandfather was a fisherman in the early 1900's. He currently fishes for monkfish and a variety of other species using a gillnet inshore along the east coast in New England. Mr. Hickman has been in the commonpool in New England since sectors began; sector management is not in place in North Carolina. He feels that sector management is not the right management strategy and would abolish it given the opportunity.
