On March 7, 2022, Joseph Smith interviewed Dr. Aleta Hohn for the NOAA Beaufort Lab Oral Histories project. Dr. Aleta Hohn was raised in Maryland.  She received her Bachelor’s and Graduate degrees in the 1970s from the University of Maryland at College Park, the latter under Dr. Eugenie Clark. While at College Park she volunteered at the Smithsonian and worked for Dr. Jim Meade, where she gained her love for marine mammals.

Ann Rose NOAA Beaufort Lab Oral Histories

Ann Rose grew up in Harkers Island, NC where her father, Chief Ira Lewis, served in the Coast Guard. Her family lived in New York for a period while her father worked at various lifeboat stations, and they later resided at Montauk Lighthouse. After her father's retirement, they returned to Harkers Island, where Ann met her husband and started working at the Beaufort Lab in 1962 where she was employed as an Editorial Assistant until 1995.

Dr. William "Bill" Sunda, a native of Arlington, Virginia, has made significant contributions to environmental science and research throughout his career. He completed his undergraduate studies at Lehigh University, graduating in 1968 with a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science. Dr. Carolyn Currin began her tenure at NOAA's Beaufort Lab in 1983, initially serving as a technician under Dr. Jud Kenworthy. Her career trajectory saw her later collaborating with Dr. Peter Hanson on the Status and Trends Program. In 1986, she pursued a Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, conducting her dissertation research at the UNC-Institute of Marine Science in Morehead City, NC. What stimulated me and pleased me very much with my position as a research biologist was that I felt that the government, under this program, was really trying to benefit the industry, and the industry recognized that they would benefit.  As you said, it was best to have good data about the fishery and the fish.  So, we developed a very, very close relationship.

Dr. Charles "Chuck" Manooch III was born in Raleigh, NC. In 1962, he joined the U.S. Army and served for several years before enrolling at Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC. Christine Reintjes and David June NOAA Beaufort Lab Oral Histories

Ms. Christine Reintjes was born and raised in Carteret County, North Carolina. She is the daughter of the late John Reintjes, a fisheries biologist at NOAA’s Beaufort Laboratory from 1956 to about 1980. Mr. David June spent his formative childhood years in Carteret County, NC. David’s late father was Fred C. June, a fisheries biologist at NOAA’s Beaufort Laboratory from 1955 to about 1966. Christine and David’s fathers established the Menhaden Program at the Beaufort Laboratory in the mid-1950s.
