Rhea and Pat Brannan Dock Stories

On March 1, 2025, Kristin Meewen and Blake Pavri interviewed Rhea Whitthoft and Pat Brannan in McIntosh County, Georgia, for the Dock Stories oral history project. Rhea Whitthoft and Pat Brannan are lifelong residents of McIntosh County with deep ties to the commercial fishing industry. Whitthoft grew up next to Meridian Shrimp Company, a family-owned dock operated by her parents and grandfather. Though she did not work formally on the dock, she contributed occasionally and observed the daily activity.

Robert Everson Boat Stories

Robert Everson is a seasoned fisherman from McIntosh County, Georgia, with a rich history in the fishing industry. His journey in the industry began with the help of his father, who also worked in the industry. Everson's early years were spent working on several boats in the Gulf of Mexico, starting as a striker and gradually gaining experience and skills. He also worked with his father out of Fort Myers, Florida, where they would embark on three-day trips to the Gulf of Mexico for shrimping.

Robert Long Fishing Traditions & Fishing Futures in Georgia

Mr. Robert Long is a seasoned commercial fisherman whose life has been deeply intertwined with the coastal waters of Georgia. Born into a family with a rich legacy in the fishing community, Mr. Long was introduced to the rhythms of the sea at a young age. His formative years were spent absorbing the traditions and skills necessary to navigate and harvest the bountiful yet unpredictable waters. At the age of 22, he took a significant step in his career by purchasing his first fishing boat, a testament to his dedication and the beginning of a lifelong commitment to the industry.

Robert Todd Fishing Traditions & Fishing Futures in Georgia

Robert Todd is a descendant of a long line of shrimp fishermen, with roots deeply entrenched in the trade that spans over four generations. Born and raised in the coastal enclave of Valona, McIntosh County, Todd's life has been inextricably linked to the sea and the shrimping industry from a tender age. His early exposure to the family business under the tutelage of his father and grandfather instilled in him a profound appreciation for the craft of shrimping.

Robert Todd Boat Stories

Mr. Robert Todd focuses on the history of his family’s commercial fishermen legacy. He discusses the boats run and operated by members of the Todd/Sawyer family. He discusses his short film, Trawling Traditions, which covers some histories of commercial fishermen on the Georgia Coast.  He also gives recommendations for the future of shrimping in Georgia.

Suzanne Forsyth Dock Stories

On February 27, 2025, Kristin Meewen and Lilah Henderson interviewed Suzanne Forsyth in McIntosh County, Georgia, for the Dock Stories oral history project. Suzanne Forsyth is a third-generation dock owner and manager whose family has been associated with the Valona dock for nearly a century. Her grandfather established the business in the 1930s, transitioning from oysters to shrimp. Her husband and other relatives operated boats, while she managed the fish house. Forsyth has lived in Valona her entire life and draws on decades of experience in Georgia’s commercial shrimping industry.

Terry Chuang Dock Stories

On February 28, 2025, Lilah Henderson and Blake Pavri interviewed Terry Chuang in Darien, Georgia, for the Dock Stories oral history project. Terry Chuang immigrated to the United States from Taiwan in 1981. After earning a graduate degree in computer science and working in the defense industry, he opened several restaurants in St. Louis. In 1999, Chuang relocated to Georgia to explore the seafood trade and ultimately transitioned into jellyfish processing, a unique niche that allowed him to support the local fishing community in McIntosh County.
