These interviews were conducted as part of Ellsworth High School's participation in the NOAA Fisheries Service  (NMFS) Local Fisheries Knowledge Pilot Project 2003-2005.  All 10th graders participated in this interdisciplinary project that involved English, History, Social Studies, and Biology classes. Biographical Sketch

Herb Hodgkins is a renowned figure in the lobster industry, known for his expertise as a lobster fisherman, entrepreneur, and researcher. Born and raised in Hancock, Maine, Herb was exposed to the world of lobster fishing at a young age, accompanying his father on fishing trips. From being a curious helper to occasionally being a little nuisance, Herb developed a deep-rooted connection to the lobster industry. Although Herb didn't pursue lobster fishing as a full-time occupation, he remained closely involved in various other aspects of the industry. Over the years, he has gained extensive knowledge and experience in different phases of lobster fishing and has contributed significantly to the industry's growth and development. One of Herb's notable contributions is his research work in collaboration with the University of Maine. For the past 25 years, he has been actively involved in lobster bait research, focusing on finding alternative bait options for lobster fishermen when the availability of herring, the traditional bait, becomes limited or expensive. Herb resides in Hancock, Maine, where he divides his time between his home in Hancock Point and the Tidal Falls Lobster Pound. His association with the University of Maine has allowed him to use their Research Vessel Black Fly for his research endeavors, demonstrating his commitment to finding innovative solutions for the lobster industry.
