Alexander Chavis, a twenty-seven-year-old male, is a dedicated worker at Bergie’s Seafood in New Bedford. Originally from El Salvador, Chavis moved to the United States when he was sixteen years old in search of better opportunities. Prior to his move, he assisted his mother in her small restaurant business and had aspirations of becoming a teacher. However, the high cost of university education in El Salvador led him to seek opportunities elsewhere. Upon his arrival in the U.S., Chavis was helped by friends and family in New Bedford to secure his first job in fish packing. |

The interviewee is a 25-year-old Guatemalan Mayan woman who works in seafood processing in New Bedford. She grew up in a poor but happy family in Las Canales. Her father left for the United States when she was four, and she stayed with her mother and three siblings. Her family was forced to move from their village due to the violence during the war in Guatemala, and her uncles also left for the United States. Her father is now a fisherman in the United States. She communicates with him via telephone and he helps the family financially. |

She got married at a young age of fifteen and initially lived with her mother-in-law, which she found challenging due to a lack of understanding. |

Her father struggled to find work and support the family due to the extreme poverty they lived in. This economic hardship was a significant factor in her decision to immigrate to the United States. |
