Robert Chervin interviewed Dr. Jerry Mahlman at the NCAR Foothills Laboratory for the Tape Recorded Interview Project sponsored by the American Meteorological Society and the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research. Mahlman reflects on his early life, highlighting formative influences from his family and early work experiences. He discusses his upbringing in Crawford, Nebraska, during the Great Depression and his fascination with severe weather and science, which began in childhood.

On October 21, 1994, Will Kellogg interviewed Joachim P. Kuettner at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). Kuettner reflects on significant aspects of his career, including his pioneering work on atmospheric and oceanic phenomena. He discusses his early scientific interests, influenced by experiences as a glider pilot, which led to his research on atmospheric electricity, mountain waves, and cloud formations.

On March 19, 1991, William W. Kellogg interviews Joseph O. Fletcher, who shares detailed accounts of his career in meteorology and atmospheric research, beginning with his early experiences in the Army Air Corps and continuing through his contributions during World War II. Fletcher describes his work with the Signal Corps, his transition to the Air Weather Service, and his role in pioneering microwave radar applications for weather detection and reconnaissance.

On October 26, 1993, Julius London interviewed Marian Haurwitz regarding her late husband, Bernhard Haurwitz, his career, and personal anecdotes from their life together. The discussion touches on Marian's first meeting with Bernhard in 1960 and their subsequent marriage in 1961, after which they traveled to Munich, where Bernhard worked as a visiting professor at the Geophysical Institute.

NCL, produced by the Computational and Information Systems Laboratory (CISL) and is a free interpreted language designed specifically for scientific data processing and visualization. On August 22, 2006, Joe Tribbia interviewed Melvyn Shapiro at NCAR in Boulder, Colorado. In this interview, Shapiro reflects on his early life, including his childhood in New York and his family’s move to Sarasota, Florida, where he encountered cultural differences. He shares his experience in high school and his initial lack of interest in academics, despite his eventual development of an interest in meteorology.

Nelder Medrud begins the interview with a discussion of his life history, education and research prior to arriving at NCAR. Medrud became acquainted with NCAR through Phil Thompson and Henry van de Boogaard while at the University of Stockholm, Sweden in the early 1960s. In the Air Force, Medrud’s specialty was applied climatology and a position opened up at NCAR focusing on applications to societal problems. The immediate focus of Medrud’s work at NCAR was on the matter of the consequences of hail to society.
