Biographical Sketch

Gary Lackmann is a professor at North Carolina State University in the Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. Additionally, Lackmann is Editor in Chief of the journal Weather and Forecasting. His research interests include the prediction of severe storm events, improved numerical models and how diabatic processes impact storm dynamics. Lackmann holds a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from the University at Albany, State University of New York (SUNY).

Scope and Content Note
Lackmann describes his childhood interest in trying to predict snowfall growing up in Seattle, Washington. He talks about finding a meteorology program at the University of Washington and his first experience learning about weather forecasting in a meteorology class after taking other foundational science classes. Lackmann describes his first research project on snowstorms. He extolls the value of mentors throughout one’s career and mentions some influential mentors. Additionally, Lackmann mentions working at both the NOAA laboratory in Seattle and the Pacific Marine Environmental Lab (PMEL). Finally, he emphasizes the importance of preparing students who will be future scientists.
