Charlie Phillips
Oral History of Georgia Fisheries
The "Oral History of Georgia Fisheries" collection delves into the cultural legacy of Georgia's commercial fishing industry, as showcased in the documentary "Shifting Baselines," a collaboration between Blue Voyage Productions, University of Georgia Marine Extension, and Georgia Sea Grant. Supported by a National Maritime Heritage Grant, this oral history initiative aims to foster appreciation for locally-sourced seafood and the resilience of multi-generational fishing traditions
Captain Charlie Phillips started his maritime career at 17, heeding the advice of an experienced shrimp captain who warned him about the allure of the sea. Despite the caution, Charlie's passion for the water grew stronger. Today, he co-owns Sapelo Sea Farms, specializing in clam cultivation and wild oyster harvesting. With over 40 years of experience, Charlie's commitment to responsible practices is evident. He believes in the importance of conscientious work, ensuring the quality and sustainability of his shellfish while safeguarding the marine environment.
